Chapter 19

Rayasia stood on a crowded bus after offering her seat to a pregnant woman. She felt a stinging sensation against the heel of her foot. Her head jerked slightly when the bus came to an abrupt stop. She stepped from the bus, gazed upward, noticed the clear blue sky. She could hear the noisy sound of traffic as cars swept by along the busy highway.

A horn sounded among the noisy flow of vehicles, caught Rayasia's attention. She turned. Her eyes met the driver's of a white van. It was the man she'd waited on the day before. The man who'd left her a generous tip. It was Rolland. He stroked his beard then motioned his hand, waved at Rayasia. Rayasia waved back as she continued walking along a sidewalk to Our Daily Bread Restaurant. The restaurant was only feet away from the bus stop. Rolland honked the van's horn again as his vehicle crawled into the restaurant's parking lot. Rayasia watched as Rolland and several other guests exited the vehicle.

“So that's the young lady you all have been making such a fuss about,” asked Rolland's friend Jason Latimere. Jason was a handsome man who loved to socialize. He had many friends from all walks of life. He fit in anywhere and everywhere. No one was ever too good or too bad for Jason to strike up a conversation with. Jason had watched Rayasia as she walked along the sidewalk when they drove past her.

“Yeah. That's her. She's the young member from your church. She said she knew your late pastor, Pastor Williams. Do you recognize her?” Rolland asked.

“We have so many members down there at First Baptist Memorial.” Jason kept his eyes on Rayasia while they walked toward the restaurant's entryway. “But something does look remarkably familiar about her.”

“So have you seen her down at First Baptist Memorial?” Rolland asked as the group continued their stroll across the parking lot.

Jason squinted his eyes, reached for a door handle. “I can't quite tell from here.” He said, still squint-eyed. “When she waits on us, I can get a better look at her. Then I'll let you know.”

After the group entered the restaurant, a hostess approached them. “How many are in your party today, sir?” The hostess asked, gleaned over the group as if she was counting.

“This isn't everyone.” Rolland said as other members of his party looked on. “If everyone shows, we'll need a table for ten,” Rolland replied. And I’m hoping everyone will leave her at least a five dollar tip. Rolland thought.

“Ten?” the hostess repeated.

“That's right.” Rolland paused then said, “Hold on a minute.” He held up one index finger and responded to the sound of his cell phone with his other hand.

“What else can I get you?” the hostess asked.

“It's nothing big.” Rolland placed his phone in his pocket, spoke to the hostess. “We have a couple more people who changed their minds. They've decided they'll join us. Got a text message from a couple more. So you better make that a table for twelve.
